Aptly titled ‘Mind the 100 Year Gap’, the Global Gender Gap 2020 discloses the widening disparities that exist at the intersection of gender, economic participation and opportunity. This resource helps us understand SDG 5 (Gender Equality) from a global impact perspective. The index employed four key dimensions (Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment) understand gender-based gaps in 153 countries. Though there have been significant improvements since the previous years, the the gap in political empowerment remains the most pronounced in the index, with only 25% of 35,127 global seats being occupied by women. The report reveals that it will take a whooping 99.5 years for us to achieve gender parity, forcing us to consider the mechanisms that are currently in play to ensure ‘gender equality.’
